Your First Choice for Custom Stone Surfaces

FAQ

Why is granite good for kitchen counters?

Granite brings in a natural beauty to any room. The material offers a low maintenance, durable work surface that will last a lifetime.

Why are some stones more expensive than others?

The price of stones are based on several factor. Supply and demand, the level of difficulty in producing the type of stone slab and the labor cost and quarry location where the stone is produced.  All of the material we use are grade A quality. Often times the more exotic stones are harder to fabricate, which also can add to the cost of producing them.

Do I have to buy the whole slab?

No, the cost of your project is based on the materials needed for your project only. We often have left over pieces, or remnants, that we use for other projects.

What are granite remnants and are they less costly?

Granite remnants are material we have left over from previous projects. We offer them at a discounted price. Remnants are often a good choice for smaller projects such as a bathrooms, islands, or fireplace surrounds.

Can granite be damaged?

Granite can possibly be damaged if a heavy object is dropped on the surface or edge of the countertop. The good news is that most damage can be repaired by a professional fabricator to a like new condition.

Can granite crack?

Granite typically will not crack if properly fabricated and installed. Premier Stone Design insures that proper support is provided to handle the desired overhangs so that damage will not occur with normal usage.

Can you scratch granite?

While granite is one of hardest materials around, it could possibly be scratched if a stone with an unpolished surface was slid across the countertop. We recommended that any stoneware type cooking dishes be placed on a protective pad  rather than directly on the countertop.  Scratches in natural stone can be repaired by a stone fabrication professional in the unlikely event they would occur.

Can I cut on my granite countertop?

You can cut on your countertop, but due to the very hard surface you can quickly dull your knives.

Does granite stain?

Premier Stone Design seals all of our countertop projects to insure that your countertop will not stain. With proper maintenance and care, your granite countertops will provide a lifetime of stain free performance.

Does granite burn? Can I place my hot pans directly on the counter top?

Natural granite can handle the heat of a pan taken directly off of a burner or over without the use of a protective pad. Quartz surfaces cannot handle temperatures higher that 200 degrees without incurring damage.

I've noticed some granites have pits on the surface - will I have these on my kitchen counters?

Micro-pitting is a natural characteristic of many types of stone. It does not reflect on the quality of the stone but should be taken into consideration when selecting the material for your project. The stone should be viewed up close and at several angles during the selection process so you are completely satisfied and aware of the granites natural features.

Will my kitchen have seams?

That will depend on material size, countertop size and clearance issues. We always fabricate using the fewest seams possible. When needed we use precision installation equipment to make sure you receive the best seam possible.

Can granite cantilever?

Yes, overhangs of 11" or less can typically be used without corbels or support structures underneath the stone. Additional overhang depths can be used with proper support.

Do I need to be concerned with bacteria on granite?

Bacteria, like any other living organism, needs a food source in order to live. Bacteria cannot eat granite. Unclean, countertops can harbor bacteria regardless of what countertop is used. Granite has performed extremely well in testing; performing second only to stainless steel in its ability to resist bacterial growth

What is the difference between Granite and Marble?

Although both are natural stones and quarried from the earth, granite and marble (and marble's relatives - limestone, onyx and travertine) are very different from each other. The greatest difference between granite and marbles lies in their porosity, softness and durability

Can I use marble, limestone or travertine on my kitchen counters?

Yes, these materials can be used in a kitchen application. However, they are susceptible to staining, scratching and etching. The use of these materials in a kitchen requires careful consideration

What is etching?

Etching is the surface damage that occurs when a chemical reaction takes place on a material that is calcium based such as marble, limestone or travertine. These types of stones react to acidic compounds such as lemon juice, vinegar, tomato sauce, etc. This characteristic is why we do not recommend using these types of stone in a kitchen.

What’s the best way to clean marble and other soft stones?

Premier Stone Design recommends using a commercially available PH neutral cleaner that is made for cleaning natural stone. DO NOT use vinegar to clean marble or other soft stones.

What other types of natural stone does PSD carry?

We fabricate and installs granite, marble, travertine, slate, soapstone, Onyx and Quartzite.

What is Quartz?  How does it compare to granite or other natural stones?

Quartz countertops contain crushed quartz mixed with resin in a ratio of about 93% quartz to 7% resin. They are manufactured in a variety of different patterns and colors. Due to the resin used to bind the quartz material together, the countertops do not require sealing. They offer a granite like work surface but do not have the heat resistance of granite countertops. If an item over 200 degrees is placed on a quartz surface permanent damage may occur.
